While our Dr. James Ralston of Dermatology Center of McKinney in McKinney, TX, treats several health-related skin concerns, our dermatologist also realizes that aesthetics are a vital aspect of dermatology. For this reason, he offers treatments like dermal fillers. It helps to know what these are and how they work before your consultation.

General Information

Dermal fillers use a gel-like substance injected underneath your skin to reduce the appearance of fine lines and creases that tend to occur during the aging process.

You'll have no downtime with this procedure, and the results are only temporary in most cases. Therefore, if you aren't satisfied with them, you merely wait a few months, and the effects fade. If you're satisfied with the results, you may have the injections again.

Types of Fillers

Different injections use different fillers.

Hyaluronic Acid

For instance, hyaluronic acid is a common one. This substance is found in the skin naturally and plumps it. With this option, the results tend to last six to 12 months, possibly longer.

Calcium Hydroxylapatite

Calcium hydroxylapatite is another option. It's a substance that's in your bones naturally. Injections with this substance tend to be thicker than hyaluronic acid, allowing the results to last 12 months or longer.

Poly-L-Lactic Acid

Our dermatologist in McKinney, TX, may recommend a poly-l-lactic acid injection. Your body doesn't produce this substance, but it's biodegradable, meaning it will break down in your body. Our practitioner may recommend this option for deeper lines. The results tend to last for two years or longer. It works slightly differently than other fillers because it breaks down within a few days after being given. However, it stimulates collagen production -- a substance your skin naturally has that maintains its firmness.

Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA)

Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) is also not made by the body. It's for the appearance of medium-to-deep wrinkles. It's used for lip augmentation as well. It's biocompatible and enhances the smoothness and plumpness of your skin for up to five years. This is a semi-permanent method for that reason. If you don't like the results, it must be surgically removed.

Our Difference

Dr. Ralston has undergone the necessary training and has a keen eye in terms of symmetry and aesthetics. While fillers aren't surgical, our practitioner understands that individuals want to look and feel better about the appearance of their skin. Therefore, he uses extreme caution and care when providing dermal fillers.
